For those of you who don’t know, or have never experienced this band, you are about to embark on a journey of a whimsical, yet exciting nature… a world only known as…

The story starts as simple as this:
Timothy Connolly was enjoying a night of live music at the Munchaba Lounge open mic nite and revelling in his wealth of talented musician friends.
He decided to enlist the help of fellow musician Christopher Kling to go up onstage and improvise something between the two of them. They needed some sort of moniker to go by, and Christopher Kling said “SUCK IT EASY”

The rest is SUCKSTORY.

..Forever changing and evolving, SUCK IT EASY is a band whose members have graced the stage in literally endless combinations of bands and always welcomes interested and motivated players.

Past, present, and future; this will hopefully fill up as an archive and repository for all that is SUCK IT EASY

Thank you, Michael.  And, hello music fans!  Tim Easy here 🙂
Who better to write about the Suck It Easy band, than founding member (and active captain) yours truly?

Yes, I launched this band with Christopher Kling back in 2002, for a larf. That doesn’t even sound like it was so long ago, does it? Hell, I’d already been in (and out of) bands for eleven years already by 2002. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Golden years. Incendiary years…

The SUNRISE period lasted from 2002 to 2003. This was a period of rock / pop / soul / blues covers, featuring such greats as Rick Birmingham (guitar etc…), Jon Middleman (bass), Ricky Woods (vox), Paul Weiss (piano), Becca Katz (vox), Johnny Bhive (drums), Benny Arocho (percussion), Blake Ian (guitar), Fritz O’Hara (guitar), Paul Wenzel (bass etc…), Rick Eberle (guitar), Rob Viccari (guitar), Bopa King carre (drums), Balls Deep (drums), Lisa Gould (vox), Matt Kelly (guitar), Alan Semerdjian (guitar), Craig Skoler (bass), Rodney James (drums), and many many more; too many to list here really. We were the house band at the Munchaba club in Levittown, and we performed regularly at Ultrasound, Village Pub South, and Da Funky Phish.

“The MOONRISE period lasted from 2004 to 2005. This was a period of inspired improvisation / wild experimentation / interpretational jazz / and the chillout freestyle jazz vibe. It was also the period during which we unveiled Wheel Of Easy, the world’s first interactive game show concert experience! Featured members of the band during this period include Chris Randazzo (guitar etc…), Atif Haq (drums), Dennis Lucenti (sax), Tommy Dank (drums), Steve Easy (drums), Balls Deep (drums), Rick Thuh (bass), Jeff Romano (bass), Jeff Slack (bass), KJW (vox), Dustin Easy (vox), Chris Celauro (percussion), Bill McIntosh (bass), and again many many more, too many to list here. We performed regularly at Munchaba, Stony Brook college, Da Funky Phish, and there was even a memorable one-off show at Swiss Tavern when I intro’ed the band from stage and promptly proceeded to go shoot pool across the room for the rest of the night.  Our Birthday Tribute Concert Series was also during the MOONRISE period, in which we honored greats like John Lennon, Elvis Presley, George Harrison, Willie Nelson, and John Fogerty.

“The MIDNIGHT years were 2006 and 2007, during which time I believe the Suck It Easy band only performed twice.  Once, at the Munchaba Lounge, an Improv Rock Opera(!), and once again (4/20/07) at the No Limits bar in Hicksville, where we shared a bill with Wiggum that night, and it was tons of fun. I can remember playing drums at one point during that show, while Balls Deep sang some wacky freestyle ditty, in-character as Don Uts, the Easytown Radio media darling, not to mention America’s favorite deadbeat dad, but anyway… (or as Don Uts might say, “so, anyway…”).

Backing up a little bit, if I may, January of 2006 saw the Suck It Easy box set get dropped, four discs, more than 4 hours of music, culled together from nine live performances, most of which were engineered by Dave Caggiano (Betamax Studios), and mastered by Rick Birmingham (Deep Sea Studios). Nine live shows. I guess you could say that the Suck It Easy box set has nine lives, har har…

The DAYBREAK period began in March 2008, with weekly performances at the Munchaba club, where Suck It Easy was the houseband on Friday nights during the Easycore happy hour networking parties. Those parties moved on to JD’s Place on Route 109 in Farmingdale, where the Suck It Easy band continued doing its thing on Fridays for a while.

Shortly afterwards, things began to really cook.  In 2009, we broke into Nautical Mile in Freeport, with appearances at both Blue 42 and The Landshark.  In March of 2009, we packed out the Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre during David Gilmour’s birthday weekend, with a marvelous set of Pink Floyd classics.  2009 went on to become a banner year for us, with appearances at Jones Beach, Long Island University, and the Tilles Center!  Soon afterwards, we were nominated by the Long Island Press in their “Best Cover Band” category.  We went on to win a “BEST OF L.I.” award, and we performed on stage at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh during the awards ceremony.  Now, in 2010, we are going stronger than ever before, and there’s a plethora of bright feathers in our cap:  Easyboat 3, Fire Island on Labor Day weekend, a return to the Tilles Center and Long Island University for the Long Island Fringe Festival, opening for Conceptual Elements and a Kali bellydance troupe at the MoMentuM festival in West Islip, opening for the amazingly great Wonderous Stories in Bellmore, and a very special birthday salute to the master of metal at the Crazy Donkey in December (appropriately called Suck It OZZY)!

Today’s core members are a fun bunch, who all enjoy helping keep great music alive as much as I do.  The band sure has changed over the years, and I wonder what will become of us after 2012.  All I can really say about that is, your guess is as good as mine!

The music of our DAYBREAK period was primarily a playful mix of 50’s 60’s 70’s rock and soul classics.  We were also not above the occasional tribute show; having already performed the Beatles’ historic Let It Be LP in its entirety on the night of its 40th anniversary, and having also recreated John Lennon’s final performance at MSG.

When the sun had set on our DAYBREAK period in 2010, the shadows grew long, paving the way for another MOONRISE period.  Freeform improvisation had become our calling card in 2011, and we rode that train all the way into March 2012.  “Concept concerts” were all the rage, whether it was The Good The Bad & The Easy, or DC Comics In Concert, or It’s The Suck It Easy Band Charlie Brown, or Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Band, or Marvel Comics In Concert, or Slow Jams & Love Songs For The Ladies, or Lifeguard Crush, and the list goes on for kilometers.

After a nice long rest period, the band returns to action again now in this 2nd half of 2012.  We have a coverband squad.  We have a freeform improvisation squad.  We have a studio recording squad.  We have more irons in the fire than you can shake a seltzer bottle at.

The future of this band will be determined by our past, and our present. The music that we perform is our gift to you. And like all great gifts, ours is a gift that keeps on giving…

Yours truly,
Tim Easy
